A bee finds flowers two kilometres away. She returns to a hive in total darkness and has to explain to her sisters exactly where.
She can't point. So she dances on the vertical comb, converting the problem into one they can feel.
Direction is the angle of the dance from straight up. Straight up means fly toward the sun; sixty degrees right of vertical means sixty degrees right of the sun. Distance is the length of the waggle — longer for farther, shorter for closer.
And she updates. If she has been inside a few hours she adjusts the angle, because the sun has moved and she knows it has.
Karl von Frisch won a Nobel Prize for working out what she was saying.
She's doing trigonometry with 960,000 neurons. We have 86 billion and still can't park.
