The people closest to AI development—the ones building it, using it daily, watching the capabilities compound—are saying things publicly that would have sounded delusional two years ago. And increasingly, those things are turning out to be true.
The question of whether AI will eventually matter is settled. What matters now is what's already changed, what's changing next, and what you can do about it while the window is still open.
What's Actually Happening

Organizations like METR measure AI capability by task duration. The doubling time has been roughly seven months, with recent data suggesting it may be accelerating to four months.
If the trend continues—and there's no evidence it's slowing—we're looking at AI that can work independently for days within the next year. Weeks within two.
The people building these systems aren't making vague predictions about a distant future. They're describing what already happened to their own workflows and warning that the same experience is coming to everyone else.
This Isn't Theoretical Anymore
Here's what makes this moment different from previous waves of AI hype: companies are deploying these systems at scale, and they're sharing the results.
Bajaj Finance, one of India's largest NBFCs, disclosed on their recent earnings call what AI is actually doing inside their operations:
Their AI systems listened to 20 million customer calls, converted voice to text, and extracted structured data. This generated 100,000 new lending offers they wouldn't have identified otherwise. Loan disbursements through AI-powered call centers reached ₹1,600 crore in a single quarter—roughly 10% of total disbursals.
They're not experimenting. They're operating.
By next fiscal year, they plan to deploy over 800 autonomous agents across sales, operations, HR, IT, risk, and document management. Every piece of customer communication—all 26 product lines—will have conversational AI embedded by May. 100% of their marketing videos and banners are now AI-generated. Document processing that required manual data entry now happens automatically with 95-96% accuracy across 43 document types.
On software development, they're reporting 25-45% efficiency gains depending on whether teams are working on legacy or modern platforms.
This isn't a pilot program or an innovation lab showcase. This is a large financial institution reorganizing core operations around AI capabilities that didn't exist eighteen months ago.
When a public company CEO tells analysts that AI generated ₹325 crore in additional volume from data they couldn't previously access, and that they're scaling this across every business function, that's a signal worth taking seriously.
The Uncomfortable Part
Here's what makes this different from previous technology shifts.
When factories automated, displaced workers could retrain for office jobs. When the internet disrupted retail, people moved into logistics and digital services. Each wave of automation left gaps—adjacent work that still needed humans.
AI doesn't work that way. It automates cognitive work broadly — improving at everything simultaneously.
Legal research. Financial modeling. Code review. Medical diagnosis. Customer service. Content creation. Data analysis. Project coordination.
Whatever you retrain for, the systems are improving at that too.
The honest assessment is that nothing done primarily on a screen is safe in the medium term. If the core of your work is reading, writing, analyzing, deciding, and communicating through a keyboard, significant parts of it are being automated.
This doesn't mean your job disappears tomorrow. Organizational inertia, regulatory requirements, relationship-based work, and licensed accountability all create friction. But the underlying capability is arriving faster than most people expect.
The gap between public perception and current reality is enormous. That gap is dangerous because it prevents preparation.
What Changes for Each Role
The practical question isn't whether AI matters. It's what to do about it. And that depends on what you do.
Software Engineers and Developers
The role is already transforming. Engineers who've adopted AI tools report spending less time writing code and more time reviewing, architecting, and directing AI output.
What to do differently:
Stop thinking of AI as autocomplete. Current models can handle multi-file changes, understand architectural context, write tests, and iterate on feedback. The engineers pulling ahead are the ones who've learned to describe outcomes rather than dictate implementations.
Invest in the skills AI struggles with: understanding business context, making architectural tradeoffs, navigating ambiguous requirements, and communicating technical decisions to non-technical stakeholders. The value is shifting from "can write code" to "knows what code to write and why."
Learn to review AI-generated code critically. The systems produce plausible output that can contain subtle errors. Your judgment about correctness, security, and maintainability becomes more valuable, not less.
Build systems that are AI-friendly to maintain. Clear boundaries, good documentation, modular architecture—the same practices that help human developers also help AI tools reason about codebases.
QA and Testing
Automated test generation is improving rapidly. AI can write unit tests, identify edge cases, and generate test data. The question isn't whether this affects QA work—it's what QA work becomes.
What to do differently:
Move up the abstraction ladder. Focus on test strategy, risk assessment, and identifying what to test rather than writing individual test cases. The systems can generate tests; they need guidance on coverage priorities.
Learn to validate AI-generated tests. Just as developers need to review AI code, QA needs to assess whether generated tests actually verify the right behaviors.
Develop expertise in areas AI handles poorly: exploratory testing, usability evaluation, understanding user intent, and identifying systemic issues that span multiple components.
Invest in understanding the business domain deeply. The real value of testing has always been ensuring the system does what users actually need — and that judgment is harder to automate.
Business Analysts and Product Managers
AI can summarize documents, analyze data, draft requirements, and generate reports. The mechanical parts of these roles are increasingly automated.
What to do differently:
Develop the skills that require human judgment: understanding stakeholder motivations, navigating organizational politics, making prioritization decisions with incomplete information, and building consensus around ambiguous tradeoffs.
Use AI to expand your capacity for analysis. If data summarization takes minutes instead of hours, you can examine more data, consider more alternatives, and make better-informed recommendations.
Learn to prompt effectively. The quality of AI output depends heavily on how you frame the problem. Developing skill at eliciting useful analysis from these systems is becoming a core competency.
Focus on the interpretive layer. AI can tell you what the data shows; the value is in deciding what it means and what to do about it.
Scrum Masters and Project Managers
Coordination, status tracking, and communication are increasingly AI-assisted. Meeting summaries, progress reports, and stakeholder updates can be generated automatically.
What to do differently:
The administrative parts of these roles are being automated. The valuable parts—resolving conflicts, removing blockers, building team trust, facilitating difficult conversations—are not.
Use AI tools to handle the documentation burden so you can spend more time on the human dynamics that determine whether projects succeed.
Become fluent in how AI tools affect team workflows. Understanding what AI can and can't do well positions you to help teams integrate these tools effectively.
Focus on the coaching and facilitation aspects of the role. Helping teams work together effectively is harder to automate than tracking their progress.
Engineering Managers
Management involves judgment, relationships, and navigating organizational complexity—areas where AI is weakest. But AI is changing what it means to manage technical teams.
What to do differently:
Understand that the economics of engineering are shifting. If AI amplifies individual productivity, team structures and headcount assumptions may need revisiting.
Develop a point of view on how your teams should use AI tools. Not mandating specific tools, but creating clarity about expectations, acceptable use, and quality standards.
Get hands-on with the tools yourself. Managers who understand what AI can actually do—not just what the marketing says—make better decisions about team structure and hiring.
Focus on the parts of management AI can't do: building psychological safety, developing people, navigating organizational politics, and creating the conditions for teams to do their best work.
The managers who will thrive are the ones who understand AI capabilities well enough to restructure workflows around them, while maintaining focus on the human elements that determine team effectiveness.
Product Engineering Directors and Senior Leaders
At the leadership level, AI creates both opportunity and obligation.
What to do differently:
Develop a strategic view of how AI affects your product and organization. This isn't something to delegate entirely to a working group. Senior leaders need enough direct experience to make informed decisions.
Consider how AI changes competitive dynamics in your market. If capabilities that required specialized teams become commoditized, what remains defensible?
Think about talent strategy. If AI amplifies productivity, you may need different skills than you needed before. Hiring for adaptability and judgment may matter more than hiring for specific technical expertise.
Model the behavior you want to see. If you're asking teams to experiment with AI tools, use them yourself. The credibility matters.
Prepare for speed. If AI compresses development timelines, decision-making needs to keep pace. Organizational processes designed for slower execution become bottlenecks.
The Practical Playbook
Regardless of your role, some things apply broadly.
Start using these tools seriously. The free versions are significantly behind the paid tiers. If you're evaluating AI based on a casual experience with free ChatGPT, you're not seeing what's actually possible. The investment is $20/month—trivial compared to the cost of being caught unprepared.
Push beyond simple questions. The mistake most people make is using AI like a search engine. The real value emerges when you give it complex, messy, real-world problems. Feed it actual documents from your work. Ask it to draft things you'd normally spend hours on. See what happens.
Iterate when it doesn't work perfectly. The first attempt often isn't great. Rephrase. Add context. Try again. The people getting value from these tools have learned that prompting is a skill, and skill improves with practice.
Build the adaptation muscle. The specific tools matter less than developing comfort with rapid change. The models that exist today will be obsolete within a year. The workflows you build now will need rebuilding. Getting comfortable being a beginner repeatedly is the closest thing to a durable advantage.
If you haven't used AI tools in the last few months, what exists today would be unrecognizable to you. The pace of improvement is not intuitive. Assumptions from even six months ago may no longer hold.
The Honest Assessment
I'm not going to tell you everything will be fine. I don't know that it will be.
What I know is that the people who will navigate this best are the ones who engage early—not with panic, but with clear-eyed curiosity and a willingness to adapt.
There's a window right now where most people in most organizations are still ignoring this. The person who understands what's coming and can demonstrate its value is going to be the most useful person in the room. That window won't stay open long.
The technology works. It improves predictably. The largest institutions in the world are committing to it. The people building it are telling you, directly, that the timeline for significant disruption is years, not decades.
Whether that's a threat or an opportunity depends largely on what you do in the next twelve months.
