மாமதக் காதல்

தமிழில் படிக்க↓

Nothing on earth can stop him now,the bull gone mad in rut.No chain they forged, no gate they hung,no door that could stay shut.

She never raised a hand at all,she never made a sound. Her eyelid moved, a flicker, less —and the mountain met the ground.

The tusks that split the banyan treewent soft as monsoon hay,and out of him there walked a calf, blinking, and led away.

So call this love of mine full musth,a rage, a roaring flood. One flicker of her eye, and Iam milk where I was blood.

They call me thief. The craft I have, the lifting of a heart,I learned from one flick of her eye.She taught me the whole art.

மா மதம் is the great musth, the rut-frenzy that makes a bull elephant unmanageable, and the poem hands that name to love. The Tamil line is built so that every word in it opens on க — களிரைக் கன்றாக்கிய கரிணியின் கண்ணசைவில் கள்வன் கற்றது — six words, six times, மோனை held across one breath. It sets a களிறு, a tusker, against a கரிணி, a cow elephant; the native Sangam word for her is பிடி, given up here because பிடி would have broken the chain. It ends on கள்வன் and கற்றது, the thief and what he learned. களவு is stealing, and what a கள்வன் steals is a heart, so the last word of the line hands him his whole craft and names where he took it from. Behind the eye stands Valluvar: பண்டறியேன் கூற்றென் பதனை இனியறிந்தேன் பெண்டகையால் பேரமர்க் கட்டு — I never knew the thing they call Death; now I know it, and it comes with a woman's nature and great war-waging eyes (குறள் 1083). Kalaignar Karunanidhi read those eyes as arrows already in the air.
