From Brazil's eastern bulge near Recife, the Atlantic gap to West Africa is about 2,800 km. But to reach Brazil's own western frontier in the Amazon is roughly 4,300 km. A Brazilian on the east coast can be nearer to another continent than to the far side of the same country.
It gets stranger. Brazil spans four time zones and touches every South American country except Chile and Ecuador. The Equator crosses its north; the Tropic of Capricorn crosses its south. One nation holds rainforest, savanna, wetland and megacity. Inside it, the Amazon is so vast it helps generate its own rainfall — the forest breathes moisture out and waters itself.
