You're Sitting Still Right Now. Except You're Not.

The numbers are almost violent.

Right now, without feeling a thing, you're spinning with the Earth at about 1,600 km/h at the equator. At the same time, the Earth is hurtling around the Sun at roughly 107,000 km/h. And the whole solar system is flying around the centre of our galaxy at around 828,000 km/h.

Stack it up and you're moving through space at a speed that would take you across a country in seconds — while you sit in a chair, convinced you're motionless.

So why don't you feel it? You can only feel changes in motion, never motion itself. Steady speed is invisible to your body. On a perfectly smooth plane at constant velocity, a coffee pours exactly as it does on the ground. Physics gives you no way to tell if you're racing or resting — only speeding up, slowing down, or turning.

That's not a quirk. It's one of the deepest truths in physics. There is no such thing as being truly "at rest." Motion only exists relative to something else. Still and moving aren't facts about you — they're comparisons.

When life feels motionless — no progress, no movement, going nowhere — remember you have no reliable instrument for sensing your own velocity. The stillness is often an illusion of having nothing to measure against.

You can be flying and feel completely stuck. You're moving faster than you think — you just can't feel constant progress. Only the turns.
