The Helpers Were Never The Ones With Power

Anne Frank's diary and photographs beside Oskar Schindler's list, set against a street in Gaza and a hand holding out a bowl, under the question everyone who reads the diary asks themselves

Everyone who reads Anne Frank's diary asks themselves the same thing: what would I have done?

The question didn't end in 1944. Miep Gies answered it with vegetables, books and two years of risk. Oskar Schindler answered it with a list. Most people simply looked away.

Gaza, now. A little over one year after the ceasefire was announced, UNICEF says more than 340 children had been reported killed and over 600 injured. On World Food Day, Gaza's Health Ministry reported 466 deaths linked to starvation and malnutrition since 2024 — 157 of them children.

Keep the moral line clear. Criticism of a state's conduct is not a judgment on a people. The question is what we do when suffering is visible and looking away is easier.

Sources: UNICEF, 7 and 16 October 2026; Gaza Health Ministry, 16 October 2026. The IPC confirmed famine in Gaza Governorate in August 2025; later assessments said food security improved after the October 2025 ceasefire but remained severe.

The helpers were never the ones with power. They were the ones who refused to look away.
